Chargers Select Alabama OT D.J. Fluker with 11th Pick – Highlight Video Added

DJ Fluker NFL's Largest Hands

D.J. Fluker – San Diego Chargers 1st Round Draft Choice. Pick #11

Fluker is an intimidating 6-foot-5, 339-pounds.  Fluker has some of the largest hands in the league, and his massive 10-and-a-half inch hands is set to manhandle his opposition not to mention his 6-foot-5, 339-pounds frame.

Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker has had a successful career anchoring the Crimson Tide’s offensive line for back-to-back national championship teams.  This is the 6th offensive linemen to go early in this draft and 3rd Alabama Crimson Tide prospect to be drafted so far. Long arms, good foot speed and powerful tackle. This team definitely needs an offensive lineman like D.J. Fluker, he should fit well in San Diego as both a pass protector and run blocker.

General Manager Tom Telesco nabbed the elite prospect who he believes will be a cornerstone of the offensive line with the 11th overall pick moments ago.  Fluker figures to make an immediate impact for the Bolts.

I will be talking with Fluker momentarily for an exclusive interview, but in the mean time, read what I wrote about him heading into the draft process.

“When talking about offensive line prospects, the buzz this year has mainly been about the big three of Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson.

Don’t sleep on D.J. Fluker.

For some reason, he’s been a forgotten man.  However, Fluker is an excellent offensive tackle who flourished as a key cog in the Alabama Crimson Tide’s back-to-back national championship teams.

Described by ESPN as “a mountain of a man,” Fluker is an intimidating 6-foot-5, 339-pounds. He’s also as tough as they come.  A mauler with a terrific motor, he is a powerful presence along the offensive line.  Fluker predominantly stars as a run-blocker where he uses his massive 10-and-a-half inch hands to manhandle his opposition.  He is a work in progress as a pass blocker since he lacks ideal foot quickness, but he still is able to use his size to his advantage to protect the quarterback.

After missing three games in 2010 due to a groin injury, Fluker has been a stalwart upfront for Alabama.  He started all 27 games the past two seasons as the Crimson Tide were crowned BCS Champions.

Thus far, Fluker has played predominantly on the right side and that is where he is projected to suit up in the NFL. If he is able to fully develop his pass blocking skills to match his elite run blocking ability, Fluker will prove to be a major asset for whatever team drafts him.”

McCoy & Telesco’s Thoughts

“He does (have a big personality),” Telesco said. “Especially for an offensive lineman, he plays with a lot of energy and passion, and you don’t see that very often, especially with big guys. That’s actually one of the things you see on the tape right away: the energy he plays with. To find a tackle that plays with his mentality and physicalness and energy, but played in the SEC and had to block a lot of speed pass rushers and had to do it at a high level, those guys can fit any system…We love players that love to play football and it comes out on the field. If you took his helmet off, he’d have a big smile on his face after a block. That’s the type of guys we want around here – guys that love to play and will feed off everybody else.”

McCoy was equally effusive in his praise for his newest right tackle.

“When you talk to him, we’re talking about bringing players who love the game of football,” McCoy said. “We’ve talked to him; he’s just one of those guys and that’s a key for us when we’re in the evaluation process, bring guys in that love the game of football.”

Fluker admitted that his personality is a part of what makes him the player that he is.

“I love to have fun out there (on the field),” he said. “Being on the field is my playground. I enjoy it.”

Despite his large personality and high amount of energy, his large frame is what will help the Chargers win games on the field.

“He’s a big, physical presence,” McCoy said. “You’re going to be surprised how big this man is.”

“He’s such a big man and plays powerful,” Telesco added. “He’s nasty on the field. But he’s an underrated athlete for how good his feet are.”The one physical measurement that stands out to Telesco and McCoy is Fluker’s arm length, which measured at 36.75 inches at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“Between the arm length, the size and the angles he takes at right tackle, (it) really helps his game,” Telesco said. “He has pretty good feet as well, but the arm length is a huge asset for him.”

Clearly, Fluker is big in size and big in energy. Chargers fans can look forward to both this coming season.
